A sign from God?

I made this blog only a few days ago. As I said in my previous post, I am an atheist (although agnostic would be closer to the mark) but I would like to find God and have faith. A well-meaning Christian friend of mine that I used to work with is the man that gave me the bible (a Gideons new testament & psalms) that I now study. Also, I asked him a question a few days ago regarding what he believed to be proof of the existence of God. I won’t go into detail about his many responses, but what happened today was interesting. He sent me a video debunking the idea that the story of Jesus is a reimagination of pagan stories (see video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30AunYXtYDg ). I didn’t reply as I didn’t have the time to watch it immediately, I was getting ready to go to the gym.

I began walking but needed to go to my local supermarket to get some water for my workout. I decided I would just listen to the video through my headphones. The video was very interesting. It systematically shut down claims made about pagan gods that made them like Jesus. NOW, this is when things got a little strange. The video began talking about Jesus’ crucifixion and it being accepted as a true event by historians. At this point I was about to pay for my water at a Pay-Yourself machine. I looked up and saw Jesus on the cross. On the back of a t-shirt.

It seems bizarre that I read so much into this, but it shook me up. It seemed like a sign, and I’ve never seen a sign before. It has also crossed my mind that it is just an extraordinary coincidence. More likely? Probably. My ego is not so large that I believe God chose that exact moment for me to see the image of the crucifixion. Although that rational thought won in that instance, I do have some regret. I wonder if it really was a sign from God. Was I meant to talk to that man? I chose not to as I thought I was being superstitious, and because he seemed pre-occupied. If I could go back, I would have spoken to him. Perhaps then I would know more if it was a sign.

Whether I was right or wrong in not talking to that man, one thing is certain. If I see what could be perceived as a sign again, I’ll follow the sign. What would I have to lose?

  1. HI there!

Just stumbled upon your blog. I’m not a Christian, but I used to be. I am completely sure that God exists. I just wanted to share a couple of thoughts in relation to your experience today, I hope that’s okay!

If seeing the person in the T-Shirt was an act of God, that would imply that God is in control of the person you saw, and you. It would mean God placed that person in your path, and is therefore in control of that person’s movement, and indeed your own movement. I believe this accurately describes the way God is involved in creation — He is in control of everything that happens. This is not, however, a Christian perspective, as the Christian worldview hinges on the idea that we have free will (otherwise doctrines like sin, judgment, the atonement, salvation, etc, don’t really make sense).

Just wanted to share that with you and throw in my tuppence worth.

Wishing you every blessing in your search for God.

    Steven

    1. Hi Steven. Thanks for your post. I guess I hadn’t thought about it that way. If free will does exist, then his choice to choose that t-shirt and his choice to go to that supermarket could not have been pre-ordained. A very good point.

Out of interest, do you now follow another religion or do you just beleive that there is a creator?

      1. Glad you understood my thinking! Thank you for your response. These days, I don’t follow a particular religion, no. I believe that the ultimate truth is that there is one God who has created all people and all their diverse religious beliefs.

It’s good to be connected with you! Thanks for following my blog and it’s my pleasure to follow back. I’ll look forward to hearing about how your search for Truth goes 🙂

  2. well, if you see what you think is a sign and it has you doing something dangerous, then you would lose.
